  Partly you are both right.

  Since both cards must keep an identical memory data set, both must write exactly the same data to the memory and this causes the write bandwidth to be the same as one card (and even has some overhead).

  However either card can read whatever data they like so the memory read speed is doubled, acting a bit like Raid1 (hence why the capacity is the same).

  Most cards do not split the rendering of each frame, they take turns in rendering each frame.
