    John Freuhe:

"There are very few programs where licensing is an issue with core counts.

Oracle (but only their database, not their apps) is really about the only notable application. But most of Oracle's customers are on site or enterprise licenses, so core count is irrelevant.

There are a few niche HPC apps that license by core.

VMware Vsphere 4.0 has a core count restriction (greater than 6 cores needs the enterprise plus license) but even with the higher cost license, the AMD server with Enterprise Plus is about the same or less expensive than the intel server with the standard Enterprise. And the AMD server gets all of the Enterprise Plus features that the intel server does not get.

"Per core" licensing is a red herring that the intel FUD machine likes to throw out, but I would guess that for ~95% of the applications out there, it is not an issue."
