kiszált az ARM-es szerverpiacról a Qualcomm ;

(Ab)Using AMD Microcode for fun and security"Microcode runs in most modern CPUs and translates the outer instruction set (e.g. x86) into a simpler form (usually a RISC architecture). It is updatable to fix bugs in the silicon (see Meltdown/Spectre), but these updates are encrypted and signed, so no one knows how microcode works on conventional CPUs. We successfully reverse engineered part of the microde semantics of AMD CPUs and are able to write our own programs. We also recovered the mapping between the physical readout (electron microscope) and the "virtual" addresses used by microcode itself. In this talk we present background on microcode, our findings, our open source framework to write custom microcode and our custom defensive measures implemented in microcode.
We build on our results presented on 34C3 to provide more insight into how microcode works and more details of the microcode ROM itself.
tl;dr diff to last talk:
- Mapped physical readout to virtual addresses, we can now read the microcode implementation of specfic instructions
- More microcode semantics known, more stable programs
- Opensource framework for creating, diassembling and testing microcode on AMD CPUs
- Simple hardware setup to develop microcode programs
- More practical examples of what you can do with microcode, focused on defense instead of offense this timeSince 34C3 we worked on recovering the microcode ROM completely and used that knowledge to implement constructive microcode programs that add to or enhance functionality of the CPU. We also worked on our now open source framework to create and diassemble microcode for AMD CPUs up to 2013. We will give a short intro into how to use it to create custom microcode programs and test them on real hardware. We also provide guidelines on how to construct the test setup we used, which is essentially any old AMD mainboard (native serial port required), a RaspberryPi with a serial adapter and some wiring including a few basic electronic components. Using this you can remotely and automatically test any number of microcode updates and it is integrated in our framework.
On the microcode program side we will show how to hijack microcoded instructions to replace them with new semantics, for example reviving the good-old BOUND x86 instruction. We also show how to roll your own microcode update verification scheme, so only trusted and signed updates can be loaded on vulnerable CPUs.
Additionally we will provide some implementation details found in the microcode ROM and show how it is used to implement complex functions like the instruction WRMSR, which among other functions is used to update the microcode.
We will start with a crash-course covering fundamentals related to instruction decoding, CPU architecture and microcode principles. We will then present our new insights and finish with a demo of how our framework works.

>De figyelembe véve, hogy mik röppentek fel,
>hogy nem lesz a kimaradó helyen semmiféle GPU (meglátjuk), ....AdoredTV - szerint - másik I/O die kell.
"Matisse" is the complete package which consists either of one or two 7nm CPU chiplet(s) and the "desktop optimized" I/O die. This same "Matisse" package will not substitute one of the CPU dies for a GPU die.
There's a good reason for this - the Matisse "desktop optimized" I/O die lacks any kind of display output because it doesn't need them and they'd simply be a waste of space.
However this does not mean that a later package of 7nm CPU chiplet, I/O die and GPU chiplet won't exist. I'm quite sure it will in fact, and it'll have a "Mobile optimized" I/O die instead, with higher bandwidth for the iGPU.
It won't be called Matisse because it's a different CPU, same as Summit Ridge and Raven Ridge were also different CPUs and given different names. The I/O die difference counts now even if the CPU chiplet remains the same.

AMD's CTO Talks to TheStreet About Next Gen Chips and Keeping Up With Rivals
During a talk with TheStreet, CTO Mark Papermaster discussed AMD's plans for rolling out its third-generation Ryzen PC CPUs, as well as his thoughts on chip technologies deployed by AMD and its rivals.
https://www.thestreet.com/investing/amd-cto-discusses-upcoming-products-14833554#1. megjelenés - mint a ZEN1 -nél
"During our talk, Papermaster indicated that AMD's launch progression for 7nm Ryzen CPUs will be similar to the one it saw for its first-gen, 14nm, Ryzen CPUs, in 2017, with high-end desktop chips followed by cheaper desktop offerings, powerful Ryzen Threadripper CPUs for enthusiasts and workstation users and Ryzen Mobile notebook processors."
#2. 7nm mobil
"Papermaster declined to say whether this will be the case. But he did suggest that AMD is looking to launch third-gen Ryzen Mobile in 2020, a point in time when 7nm+ volume production should be well underway. "If you look at the [product launch] cycle, next year would be a natural time for that migration," he said. "We'll have more details on that as we get closer to that time.""
#3. Gaming - single thread
"Papermaster said AMD is mindful of the single-threaded performance gap that has remained for Ryzen, and promised his company will deliver "very exciting gains" in this area while maintaining its multi-threaded performance lead. "What you will see with our third-generation Ryzen really is simply outstanding gaming performance," he declared."
#4. chip-packaging
"When asked whether AMD, which has unveiled plans to use a 2D "chiplet" packaging architecture for 7nm desktop and server CPUs, could deploy something like Foveros, Papermaster didn't rule out the possibility. But he also insisted AMD is comfortable with its decision to go in a different direction in the near-term."For CPUs, we looked at the analysis of a 3D stack versus a planar [2D] integration of those chiplets. It's always an individual optimization for the use case," he said, while adding there's "a constant re-evaluation at every generation" regarding which direction to go in."
#5. Big.Little core
"Likewise, Papermaster insisted there's no need for AMD to create CPUs featuring cores of different sizes in most of its markets, particularly since it can prevent cores from drawing power when they aren't being used.
"It's a constant debate, does the Big.Little core really make sense?...On applications like a smartphone, I don't think there's any debate, because you have many, many maintenance tasks that can be offloaded to the little cores. But in most of our markets, it's not clear that there's benefit for the little cores," he said."
#6.AMD's Views on ARM Server CPUs
"When asked about his thoughts on ARM in the data center, Papermaster stated AMD "looked hard at ARM" and decided -- given that ARM's software ecosystem was still immature -- it made sense for AMD to direct its attention towards launching high-performance x86 products. At the same time, he admitted that ARM-based server CPUs will continue providing competition.
"ARM will progress, ARM will build out an ecosystem," he said. "We don't see that there's a huge difference in performance per watt between one instruction set offering and another, we think they're within a few percent. It's just that there will be a more and more competitive environment over time...to us that just makes a more robust market out there and I think that's good for the industry. It keeps everyone on their toes.""

ha igaz ...
Június -ra mondják a Ryzen3x00 sorozatot
Az X570 chipset saját tervezés ( nem ASMedia )
A B550 szokásos módon negyed-évvel később jön.
https://www.gamersnexus.net/news-pc/3428-amd-converting-epyc-to-x570-dropping-asmedia"-The previous AMD chipsets were made by ASMedia, which introduced some early challenges in development for the 1000-series Ryzen parts. For the new series of chipsets, our understanding is that AMD will be designing the silicon itself rather than tapping ASMedia for assistance.
- AMD is migrating some of its Epyc IO down to X570, making updates for Ryzen 3000 CPUs
- The X570 chipset will run at about 15W, rather than 6-8W for the X470 chipset. This will not impact chipset heatsink requirements in any meaningful way, as the chipsets can present run on air, but most manufacturers stick an overkill heatsink on the chipset just for looks. It’s more noteworthy because the X570 chipset will be capable of more throughput (and will run hotter). PCIe 4.0 is part of this potential.
- We aren’t yet clear on details of PCIe 4.0 out of the chipset. Some of our sources have indicated that the PCH will likely only deliver PCIe Gen3 to the PCIe slots, but that doesn’t say anything about NVMe or M.2 compatibility. We know that PCIe 4.0 will come out of the CPU and at least drive GPUs, but the bigger benefit of PCIe 4.0 will be in I/O devices, so we suspect that X570 will accommodate PCIe Gen4 in some capacity. Again, this is where we are least clear and where our sources conflicted the most. AMD is still determining final specs of the X570 chipset.
- AMD is looking to launch its B550 chipset roughly one quarter after X570 – that’s probably going to be third quarter, but it’ll depend on X570 gets hit with a delay. The X570 timeline is currently up in the air, whereas Ryzen 3000 should be ready by June. Ryzen 3000’s launch will be dependent upon AMD’s strategy for its chipset and whether the chipset faces challenges."

"Mark Lipacis
Thanks for taking my question and great to hit the mid-single digit milestone exiting the year. Lisa, as you start -- I just wanted to confirm, you expect to start shipping Rome mid-year. And as you do, what's the biggest risk for Rome? Is it execution on delivering the product, or is it the sales process convincing customers to take EPYC to in volume?
Lisa Su
So I think with Rome, our biggest opportunity/risk is adoption rate. I think from a competitive standpoint, the product is very solid, everything going through our development labs looks very good, as well as our customer engagements. And so this is just about getting customers to production as fast as possible. We do expect though that the adoption rate for Rome will be faster than the adoption rate for Naples. And the reason for that is we are in a socket compatible infrastructure. And so customers who don't necessarily need the newest features of the platform can actually use the same motherboard and system that they currently have with Naples and drop in Rome. And so I think that will help us accelerate some of the adoption. But right now, it's about helping customers in their environment. We are widely sampling Rome and there's a lot of work to be done but we feel good about the trajectory.
""Mitch Steves
First on the C&G side, I realized that there's going to be a lot of sequential difficulties there. But when I think about the long-term growth rate, I know you guys have talked to high singles to double-digit growth. Is that still essential where you think that business can grow at long-term? And then secondly in terms of the next EPYC 2. Is there any reason why it would underperform Intel 10 nanometer in a testing environment? And if so, why would that be?
Lisa Su
Let me take the second question and then maybe Devinder you can take the first question. So as it relates to our ROM product, when ROM was originally planned, we had planned that it would be competing against the 10 nanometer product. So that was our expectation when we started. I think we've shown some of the generational performance advantages in terms of double digit performance on a socket basis, 4 times performance on a floating point basis. And the other thing I would say is that with our second generation Rome, the customer set is now more used to our architecture and so some of the architectural and software improvements that we've also spent quite a bit of time on over the last four to six quarters are coming into play. So I think we feel very good about the competitive positioning of Rome. And the other thing to keep in mind is we are deep in development of our next generation Beyond Rome. So the Zen 3 product portfolio is deep in development as well. And so that our goal is to ensure that we have a consistent cadence of very competitive products.

Ez mi lehet? "Rhino" ? mintha egy szoftver név (is) lenne ...
valami tipp ?"An unknown product 'Rhino' is also in the offing in late Q2 2019 but details are scarce right now — it could be another CPU, APU, or a mobile product."

"The elephant in the room is Amazon, and last year’s reveal of a new AWS instance based on their own-in house ARMv8 Graviton processors marked a significant moment showcasing that Arm is now irrefutably becoming mainstream in the industry.
While Arm did not divulge any information on who will be employing the new Neoverse N1 platforms first – I would not be surprised if the next generation Graviton processor will based on the N1 CPU."Mottó: "A verseny jó!"

AMD EPYC Market Share Gains in 2018 Our Take
https://www.servethehome.com/amd-epyc-market-share-gains-in-2018-our-take/"Outside of Intel, the question of 2019 is not whether AMD is going to gain server market share. Instead, it is how much share is AMD going to gain. The industry knows that the next generation of AMD EPYC Rome is going to offer features that Intel cannot match in the same timeframe. We believe that AMD is moving away from traditional x86 cores as the center of everything to the I/O hub is the center of a system and we may see support for features like CCIX with Rome. That is precisely the type of bold move that will get an industry ecosystem primed around AMD and will translate to share gains that will greatly outpace 2.4% year/year.
Low double digits are possible, but the musings that AMD will have 33%+ market share ending Q4 2019 we do not think are feasible either. The server industry moves slowly and unlike the consumer side that is always buying the newest generation, there are many customers that are buying older generations of systems even though Intel Xeon Skylake-SP has been in the market for over six quarters."
AMD EPYC 3201 8-Core Benchmarks Review and Milestone
https://www.servethehome.com/amd-epyc-3201-8-core-benchmarks-review-and-milestone/Microsoft Azure Lsv2 Instances Based on AMD EPYC Available
https://www.servethehome.com/microsoft-azure-lsv2-instances-based-on-amd-epyc-available/"Overall, this is another step in AMD EPYC market penetration. We have heard several cloud ODMs, including at least one that supplies Microsoft, discuss their AMD EPYC OCP nodes. When cloud providers deploy AMD EPYC, and customers use the instances, this puts enormous pressure on Intel. We have heard that cloud provider CPUs from Intel are now custom foundry parts, but they are also to see discounts rumored to be well in excess of 50%. This is not just CSP buying power that is pushing the market. Instead, it is increased competition from AMD and even Arm. "
Channel Cobblers and a Hole in the AMD EPYC Line
https://www.servethehome.com/channel-cobblers-hole-amd-epyc-line/"In the Mercury Research market share numbers, Intel gets a very interesting bump from what I will term “channel cobblers.” Channel cobblers will buy systems like the HPE Pre-Configured quick ship models (above), or those from other vendors like Supermicro or Dell EMC. Cobblers will remove CPU(s), RAM, and potentially other components. They will then reconstitute a server sourcing components from elsewhere, and sell excellent systems to their customers."
...
"While the Intel Xeon Bronze 3014 starts around $210 list, the AMD EPYC 7251 starts around $475. I have told AMD executives that they need a lower cost part. I understand their hesitation. From a people perspective, there are few engineers and marketers who set out to make their life’s work to build a product that most often will become waste (direct mail providers aside.) At the same time, AMD needs to engage here to attract cobblers."Mottó: "A verseny jó!"

> Nem gondolom, hogy a Macen dolgozó programozók jelentős számban lennének jelen
én amikor elmegyek egy nemzetközi sw fejlesztői konferenciára,
akkor 50--60% -ban OSX-es gépeket látok.
( A frontend, design vonalon még több - a backend részen viszont kevesebb )4-5 ével ezelőtt elég trendi volt a MacBook. és nem csak az iPhone és a OSX-re fejlesztők között.
persze azóta már sokat változott a helyzet, de azért még manapság is észrevehető."Why do most of the developers in Silicon Valley prefer macOS over Linux or Windows?"

valószinüleg hazai Enterprise + Windows vonalon dolgozol,
ahol a fejlesztőknek kicsi szavuk, hogy milyen gépet választanak maguknak.
( de ott is a trendi projekt menedzserek már 10 éve is MacBook-al villogtak )amúgy én is elfogult vagyok ( ==> Thinkpad + Linux ) ráadásul még a Retina Display-t se birná a szemem.
mindenesetre már nézegetem a RYZEN -es Thinkpad-eket. ( "A285" , "A485" )

"Developers' Primary Operating Systems" - Prof Developers:
- Windows: 49.4
- MacOS 27.4%
- Linux-based: 23.0%persze ez se reprezentativ, mindenesetre sokkal nagyobb mint a jelenlegi ARM-es szerver részesedés.

AMD EPYC 3101 Benchmarks and Review A Lower-End Part

AMD EPYC 3101 v. Arm Competition
The AMD EPYC 3101 is more vulnerable to the Arm competition than higher-end SKUs. As Arm cores near x86 cores in terms of general compute capability, memory bandwidth, and I/O, the easiest adjacency is the segment that AMD EPYC 3101 occupies. There are eight core Arm chips on the market that if they became SBSA compliant, and added additional memory controller and PCIe capabilities could occupy this space. The technology is there, and we expect the 7nm generation to be the one where we start to see real competitors emerge. While those competitors are coming, the AMD EPYC 3101 has matured to the point that it works out of the box using the same ISO OS install images that are used on Intel machines. As one can also see from the one year lag between when we saw the launch and when channel partners started making adaptable products, AMD also has an advantage that it has been in the market.

jól össze lettem zavarva .. mit értenek most a "die"-alatt ...
"Of interest, the patches do prepare for future AMD CPUs moving to more than two memory controllers per die. One of the patches spells out clearly, "The first few models of Family 17h all had 2 Unified Memory Controllers per Die, so this was treated as a fixed value. However, future systems may have more Unified Memory Controllers per Die."
A follow-up patch also notes that these future AMD CPUs could have as many as eight memory controllers per die, "Increase the size of the struct chip_select array to eight, which is the largest number of controllers per die currently supported on AMD systems."
