  I seem to have found a decent, though not confidence-inspiring, workaround to this problem. I now regularly boot to a ''selective start-up'' that differs from the factory version in only one way.
  
  Running ''msconfig'' at the RUN menu (found on the START menu), under the ''Services'' tab I have disabled the ''Ati HotKey Poller'' of all things, and that appears to eliminate the whole start-minimize routine.
  
  If anyone is aware of a patch to the Ati HotKey Poller that makes it behave better, I'd be glad to hear of it.
