    R520 taped out

    Fudo get shape before Yule

OUR WELL INFORMED Spanish lady nicknamed Informationa Digitala told us that ATI's next generation chip codenamed R520 is taped out. She confirmed that the chip is 90 nanometres. As far as we know it works well, but it's early days yet.
We suggest that we are talking about A01 silicon and that there is always some hardware things and flaws that can be fixed in the next revision. ATI still has time as the company wants to launch in a Spring window. The chip is real, the chip is there and all of the previous news that we brought is confirmed.

Nvidia changed its plans to compete with the Fudo R520, indicating that the R520 chip is definitely going to be a good one. ATI still have to live with the fear that the new Nvidia chip might be better.

We have to add that R520 will finally include 32 bit colour precision. Saying that R520 is Shader Model 3.0+ compatible naturally means that this chip actually uses 128 bit colour. Nvidia's NV40 generation supports 32 bit colour per channel (red green nlue and alpha) and so will the R520. That’s a Shader Model 3.0 requirement.

Let's hope that ATI will have these chips out on time. Fudo chip boy, we are all waiting for you. Merry Christmas to you all. µ

ATI's R520 to arrive in May

ATI PLANS to introduce its brand new R520 technology exactly a year after it announced its R420. Despite the news that ATI might even be ready with R520 for CeBIT, it seems that the company wants to hold its breath and try to release the silicon in May.
We already said that the R520 taped out and our sources confirm that the chip is in good shape, but then again it's still the first working silicon that it got out of the fab. It takes at least six weeks to get the next revision of silicon. This means that ATI is still on track and will possibly make one more revision before it goes to final production.
