Tribble is Going Deep!As announced on today’s stream, we’re completely reworking Deep Space Encounters, and you can test it now on Tribble!
By Ambassador Kael June 09, 2026, 12:00 PM
Friends, Generals, Admirals… lend me your… uh, eyes?
As most of you are already aware, the Tribble Test Server was recently made available once more, and we’re excited to announce that we’re going to be using this server to run a small preview of upcoming features starting this week!
Tribble will soon be updated to our next Branch, which internally means a lot of things. One of the more important aspects of this (which we’ve already done a small amount of testing of on Tribble) is the addition of performance improvements and code efficiency updates that we’re looking forward to getting profiling information on, based on player activity on Tribble.
But as exciting as that is, it’s not even the tip of the iceberg of what you’re going to see appearing this week!
Unlike past updates, where we shelter our new Content from the eyes of players until the last minute in order to not spoil the surprise, we have decided to instead release one of our Content features to Tribble this week in preparation for its Holodeck launch next month! That means anyone logging into Tribble after it is updated will have the opportunity to experience a work-in-progress version of an exciting new gameplay option coming soon to Holodeck.

So without further ado, allow me to announce: The Return of Deep Space Encounters!
Current players of the game are likely familiar with the existing form of DSEs – the big angry red clouds that sometimes appear in Sector Space, and the simple bite-sized content that they contain. In this content update, we’ve taken it upon ourselves to update this feature in significant ways. Here are just a few of the things you’ll see on Tribble, that we’re interested in getting your feedback on:

    Updated Sector Space Iconography
In an effort to more clearly help you navigate these maps, we’re in the process of re-imagining all the icons you see when wandering the Alpha, Beta, Delta, and Gamma Quadrants.
Alongside this update, we have also removed a bunch of icons for star systems that did not contain content. In this way, we’re hoping it makes it easier to determine just where you can go to engage with various activities available in STO – every icon is something to do!

    A Brand-New Compass HUD Element
To further facilitate this sense of free exploration, we’re adding a Compass element to the Sector Space HUD. This was already available on Ground Maps, but we’re in the process of also updating its functionality in those regions, to step up its utility and usefulness as an actual navigational tool worthy of taking up space on your screen!

    Sector Space Collectibles
We felt that flying thru Sector Space lacked agency and those periodic hits of attention-grabbing action, so we’re trying something wholly new in this area… Periodically as you travel in Sector Space towards your destinations, small pickups will appear in front of your ship and approaching them will automatically tractor them into your cargo bay. Picking up these items will give you a very short burst of sector space travel speed, and we have future plans for them to also improve your performance in DSEs (but that part’s still work-in-progress).

    Deep Space Encounter Content Overhaul
The actual activities and encounters you will experience when entering a DSE have completely re-designed! While our goal for this content remains for it to be lightweight and quick to complete, we still felt like the mission objectives and micro-stories you experience when doing them could stand to be made more interesting and engaging.
Our Content Designers have imagined a total of 15 new mission frameworks that will be randomly generated each time you enter the DSE Map. Enemies and Allies are also chosen randomly from those appropriate to be found in each Quadrant. In addition to this variance, our Environment Artists have created sets of re-imagined locations with their own randomized elements. Between these variables, our hope is that every DSE feels a bit different and helps this content feel like it offers an enormous sense of variety.

    REWARDS! And Featured Quadrants!
We understand how motivated our playerbase is by Rewards, so it would be remiss of me to not talk a bit about what you are given in exchange for completing DSE content.
The number one reward vector being offered by this revamped content is Endeavor XP. That’s right – you asked for a means to supplement your ability to earn this coveted form of progression, and we’re listening. While the reward amounts you will see on Tribble are subject to change, we feel like we’ve arrived at a balanced place as a baseline.
Featured Quadrants are an entirely new feature that directly influence the rewards gained from each DSE. While a specific Quadrant is Featured, any player completing any DSE within that Quadrant will gradually increase its Featured Bonus gauge, which in turn is used to calculate bonuses to the rewards earned each time you complete a DSE. Thus, the more you and other players engage with DSEs in a Featured Quadrant, the greater the rewards that you all reap. Quadrants will cycle thru Alpha, Beta, and Delta at regular intervals.
    And that’s… everything? FOR NOW!
This announcement is only meant to be a very brief overview of the changes coming to Tribble, as a means of keeping our playerbase informed, but also as a way to focus your feedback in the days and weeks to come before this new content is rolled out to everyone on Holodeck, and later to Console platforms. Nearer to release, we intend to publish a more thorough Dev Blog officially announcing this feature and its many moving parts, as well as more commentary on their development process, and future plans to continue development of Deep Space Encounters and Sector Space.
This also isn’t the entirety of what our next Season of content will include, so keep an eye/ear out for additional announcements throughout this month.
We hope you all enjoy getting this opportunity to preview this rather ambitious feature overhaul, and we look forward to hearing your feedback on it on our Official Discord. Make sure to share it in the Tribble Section of the Feedback Area!
