Talán rátaláltam az igazságra az SB850 hálózati vezérlőjével kapcsolatban. Magában a féli hídban csak egy PHY van mint ahogy az összes többi chipkészletben is. Na de mi is az a PHY?

A PHY connects a link layer device (often called a MAC) to a physical medium such as an optical fibre or copper cable. A PHY typically includes a PCS and a PMD layer. The PCS encodes and decodes the data that is transmitted and received. The purpose of the encoding is to make it easier for the receiver to recover the signal.
Ethernet: A PHY chip (called PHYceiver) is commonly found on Ethernet devices. Its purpose is digital access of the modulated link. Usually used together with an MII-chip or interfaced to a Microcontroller that takes care of the higher layer functions.

PHYceiver is a device that operates at physical layer of OSI network model.
An Ethernet PHYceiver is a chip which can send and receive Ethernet frames; it typically lacks such advanced features of network interface card (NIC) chips as Wake-on-LAN or Boot ROM support. Also, unlike a NIC, a PHYceiver doesn't have its own MAC address.
Some examples of Ethernet PHYceiver chips are Integrated Circuit Systems ICS1893, Realtek RTL8201 and VIA Technologies VIA6103.
Common applications for Ethernet PHYceivers are hubs and switches."
